NC 39
Route: Enters Wake County just south of Five County Stadium.
Leaves Wake County just south of interchange with US 64.
Major
Intersections:
US 264 and 264A within a few feet of each other, and NC 97 about a mile north of 264.
History: Entered Wake County in 1940, and hasn't been touched since. After all, there isn't much that can be done with a three-mile-long highway.
Attractions: At the intersection of 39 and US 264A stands Five County Stadium, home of the Southern League (AA) Carolina Mudcats. Urban legend holds that Minor League Baseball has a rule prohibiting franchises from locating within thirty miles of each other, and the AAA Durham Bulls exercised this rule to force the Mudcats to the outskirts of Wake County. In business since 1991, an eternity in minor league baseball, the Mudcats draw from an area encompassing eastern Wake County and most of the counties to the east, and are the only professional sports franchise east of Raleigh.
Comments: The water tower at the top of the page sits across the street from Five County Stadium, and is visible from US 264. Erected in 1991 to celebrate the Mudcats' arrival, it's been kept up much better than most other billboards in the area.
