Major
Intersections:
NC 50, 1 mile east of the Durham county line.
US 1 just inside Wake Forest.
US 1A in downtown Wake Forest.
NC 96, just before the Franklin County line.
History:

Originally, 98 only entered Wake County for a mile, ending at today's intersection with NC 96 (then known as NC 91, which continued west to Durham). In 1940, 98 was extended north to Youngsville in Franklin County, doubling its distance in Wake to a whopping two miles.

In late 1952/early '53, NC 98 was rerouted to Durham over what had been NC 264 (and what was earlier NC 91). No more changes were made until 2005, when the eastern two-thirds of the Wake Forest bypass were completed.

Attractions: 98 roughly parallels Falls Lake from east of Wake Forest to about NC 50. Until the bypass of downtown Wake Forest was completed in 2005, NC 98 went past the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (former Wake Forest College) in downtown Wake Forest.
Comments:

The Wake Forest bypass was completed in three sections from east to west. From South Main Street (US 1A) to Jones Dairy Road the bypass was completed in 2003, but was not signed as NC 98 at the time. When the next 1.5 miles opened from US 1A to Capital Boulevard (US 1) in 2005, NC 98 was realigned along the length of the bypass, leaving behind a new Business NC 98 that followed the old road through downtown Wake Forest. NC 98 itself shared pavement with US 1 for a few hundred feet between the old and new alignments at this time.

The western third of the bypass opened September 2, 2010 and NC 98 was then rerouted along the length of the bypass. Upon the completion of this segment, the short multiplex of NC 98 and US 1 was eliminated, and Falls of Neuse Road was realigned to meet the western extension of Business NC 98 near the western end of the bypass. At both ends of the bypass, no turn is required to follow the bypass, but to follow the old route (now Business 98) through Wake Forest requires turning off the bypass.

98 is a road that one must be quite awake to drive.  It is very straight, especially between 50 and Wake Forest.  Before Falls Lake was created in the early '80s, part of 98 ran along a slightly curvier route south of the current one.
